MUSTANG, NEPAL — The Gharpajhong Climate Conference 2083 commenced in Mustang on September 15, drawing over 2,000 guests, including representatives from 421 local governments and 36 District Coordination Committees from across Nepal’s seven provinces. The two-day event, inaugurated by Minister for Forests and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, aims to foster coordinated local action against climate change and raise awareness on its impacts.
The conference is organized by Gharpajhong Rural Municipality with active participation from mothers’ groups, youth clubs, village societies, and local hotels which provide accommodation. Vice-Chairperson Jamuna Thakali highlighted extensive local involvement, with village community groups managing food services and event logistics.
Preparations for the event included cultural decorations reflecting local art, installation of streetlights, and ensuring uninterrupted access to drinking water, electricity, and internet services. Health-worker volunteers are on site for medical checks, alongside organized vehicle parking and traffic management.
Key features of the conference include a symbolic 28-foot spherical balloon depicting a crying Earth, designed to raise climate change awareness. More than 50 stalls exhibit Mustang’s agricultural products, showcasing local resilience and adaptation strategies.
The event will conclude with a declaration addressing the effects of climate change and setting out commitments for future collaborative efforts. This conference underscores the vital role of local governments and community groups in Nepal’s climate response and sustainable development.
