This recognition underlines the cities’ commitment to advancing sustainable urban systems through circular economy solutions.
The program, led by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste with support from UN-Habitat and the UN Environment Programme, seeks to promote best practices and inspire other cities globally to adopt zero-waste approaches.
Other cities included in the list span across various continents, from Accra in Ghana to San Francisco in the United States and Yokohama in Japan, showcasing a broad global commitment to tackling the growing municipal waste challenge.
According to the UN Environment Programme, worldwide municipal solid waste exceeds 2.1 billion tons annually, impacting climate change, biodiversity, public health, and livelihoods. By recognizing cities like Iloilo and San Fernando, the UN emphasizes the crucial role local governments play in driving environmental change and sustainable urban development.
UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rosbach highlighted local governments’ vital role in reshaping local economies and promoting inclusive solutions integrating workers and communities.
