Commuters at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) face extended waiting times as bus operators reduce the number of running units in response to high oil costs, ahead of the anticipated surge during Holy Week.
The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) is currently experiencing longer passenger waiting times due to a significant reduction in the number of buses servicing routes. This reduction is a direct consequence of continuous mega increases in oil prices, forcing some bus operators to scale back their operations to mitigate financial losses. According to bus drivers and staff, operational units have decreased substantially—for some operators from 80 to about 50 buses, and others from 9–10 units to only 4–5 units. High fuel prices have impacted sales and revenue, necessitating these cutbacks.
PITX officials have confirmed the situation presents major challenges as passenger volume is simultaneously rising. More commuters are opting for public transport as the cost of private vehicle fuel escalates. The head of PITX Corporate Affairs and Government Relations, Jason Salvador, noted that operators from various provinces, including Batangas City, San Jose (Nueva Ecija), and Pangasinan, have similarly reduced their fleet and some even consider further cuts.
Though buses remain available, they are deployed only when fully booked, which results in longer wait times for passengers. Travelers have adjusted their schedules to avoid congestion and potential fare hikes, which have reportedly increased by around 70 Philippine pesos in some cases. Despite these challenges, passengers prioritize family reunions and traditional travel during Holy Week.
Security protocols continue at PITX, including the use of X-ray machines and K9 units. Authorities have confiscated numerous prohibited items and urged passengers to report illegal fare overcharging. Advanced ticket booking is strongly recommended to manage the expected passenger influx and service adjustments.
