The Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the Philippines announces intensified inspections of oil depots and scrutiny of fuel imports to prevent hoarding and manipulation of supplies as geopolitical tensions threaten global oil markets.
In response to escalating conflict in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to global oil supply, the Philippines’ Bureau of Customs (BOC) has announced plans to conduct thorough inspections of oil depots and closely monitor fuel importations. BOC Assistant Commissioner and spokesperson Vincent Philip Maronilla stated that the agency is actively coordinating with petroleum importers as well as government bodies such as the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to ensure fuel supplies are legally imported, properly documented, and fairly distributed across the market.
At a public briefing under the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon program, Maronilla emphasized the use of BOC’s visitorial powers to inspect petroleum depots. The inspections aim to verify that stored fuels have been legally imported and to prevent any form of hoarding that could artificially restrict supply. The BOC will also verify the accuracy of fuel shipment declarations to maintain reliable import and supply data.
Despite these heightened activities, officials have not detected any irregularities thus far. Authorities urge the public to refrain from panic buying to avoid unnecessary strain on fuel availability. The warnings come amid recent Middle East military actions, including a US-Israel operation targeting Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes and raising fears about oil export stability. Notably, the Philippines imports approximately 98% of its crude oil from the Middle East, heightening the strategic importance of safeguarding these supply chains.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin also noted a forthcoming fuel price increase ranging from 17 to 24 Philippine pesos per liter, scheduled to be implemented progressively over seven days to mitigate sudden price shocks.
This coordinated government response reflects ongoing vigilance to maintain fuel market stability and protect consumers amid uncertain global energy conditions.
