Manila Implements Four-Day Workweek Amid Rising Fuel Prices

In response to escalating fuel costs linked to Middle East conflicts, Manila City government postpones workweek to four days to conserve energy and reduce expenses.

The Manila City government, led by Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso, has introduced a four-day workweek for city employees in response to rising fuel prices amidst the increasing tensions in the Middle East. Through Executive Order No. 8, series of 2026, city offices will operate Monday through Thursday with extended hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., while Fridays and weekends are designated non-working days. Essential services will continue operations to ensure uninterrupted public service. This move follows similar announcements from national authorities, including a temporary four-day schedule for executive branch offices starting March 9, 2026. Fuel price spikes are tied to joint military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The adjustment aims to reduce operational costs and conserve energy amidst the volatile geopolitical climate affecting oil supplies.
