Trump Orders US DOJ to Investigate Democrats Over Alleged Threats Amid Political Tensions

President Trump directs the US Justice Department to examine Democrats for purportedly intimidating individuals with impeachment threats, amid heightened political clashes following midterm elections.

WASHINGTON — In a recent development highlighting ongoing political tensions in the United States, former President Donald Trump has publicly instructed the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Democratic lawmakers. Trump alleges that Democrats have been threatening numerous individuals with punitive measures such as impeachment, actions he characterizes as potentially criminal, though he has yet to provide supporting evidence.

This directive comes shortly after the November 2026 midterm elections, which saw Democratic candidates decisively defeat Republicans, securing control of Congress effective January 2027. Democratic leaders have pledged to reestablish Congressional oversight over the executive branch through hearings and investigations, focusing on the Trump administration’s activities.

Trump’s accusation specifically mentions Democrats sending ‘threatening letters to many people, all innocent.’ These letters include requests for documents related to various matters, such as fundraising associated with the renovation of the White House’s large ballroom.

Among those referenced by Trump is Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, a Democrat who earlier suggested Congress should investigate individuals involved in enabling the former administration’s policies. Slotkin advocated for a deterrence message to young professionals considering employment within Trump’s administration, indicating potential professional risks.

Slotkin had previously faced investigation by the DOJ as part of a group of Democratic lawmakers with national security backgrounds, who urged military and intelligence officers to disobey unlawful orders. Nonetheless, a grand jury declined to indict the group.

Defending accountability, Slotkin emphasized, ‘If you break the law or use taxpayer dollars to enrich yourself, you should be held accountable. If you didn’t break the law, then it’s all good.’ The DOJ has not immediately commented on President Trump’s latest instructions.

This episode represents a continuation of sharp partisan disputes in U.S. politics, underlining the contentious atmosphere following a shift in Congressional power and ongoing scrutiny over the prior administration’s conduct.
