Filipina Seafarer Proves Gender Is Not a Barrier, Breaks Stereotypes in Maritime Industry

KC Abigail Chin-Sood, a nearly 11-year veteran seafarer, demonstrates that being a woman is not an obstacle in the male-dominated maritime sector, sharing her journey and challenges.

KC Abigail Chin-Sood, a Filipina seafarer with almost 11 years of experience, has proven that gender is not a barrier for success in the maritime industry, traditionally led by men. In an interview with GMA Pinoy TV, Chin-Sood shared that she initially never dreamed of a career at sea, aspiring instead to become a lawyer or a pilot. However, financial limitations in her family led her to pursue marine transportation, following her father’s footsteps as a seafarer.

Currently serving as a second officer on tanker ships transporting crude oil globally—including Europe, America, Africa, and around the Mediterranean Sea—Chin-Sood acknowledged the challenges she faced after graduating, particularly uncertainties about being accepted by shipping companies wary of hiring women. Through determination, she started as a deck cadet and has continuously proven herself in the male-dominated field.

She emphasized that being a woman in this industry is not a disadvantage but can be a strength, citing women’s unique perspectives, communication, and collaborative skills. Chin-Sood also spoke candidly about the emotional toll of being away from family for extended periods and the physical demands and risks of maritime work, especially in high-risk areas.

Despite hardships, she finds rewards in the sense of adventure, constant learning, and the opportunity to visit different parts of the world. Through her social media presence, boasting over 149,000 Facebook followers, she shares her life at sea to inspire others and dispel stereotypes about seafarers and women’s roles in the industry.

She proudly carries Filipino values of bayanihan (communal unity) and malasakit (deep care) wherever she goes, which guide her professionalism and connection with diverse communities. Chin-Sood encourages other women seafarers to break barriers and pursue their dreams without limitation, highlighting that their strength is boundless.

This story underscores a vital message: that gender should not restrict opportunities in maritime careers, reflecting broader themes of empowerment and inclusivity in overseas employment sectors relevant to Filipino workers.
