The stepdaughter of Ateneo de Manila University basketball coach Tab Baldwin has revealed through social media the challenges faced by her mother after raising concerns about the coach to the university, according to the mother's lawyer.
The stepdaughter of Ateneo de Manila University basketball coach Tab Baldwin has publicly shared her mother’s difficult experiences after speaking out against Baldwin before the university. The disclosure was made through a social media post by Giota Kalogirou, who corroborated claims from a woman named Efi, identified as Baldwin’s estranged wife. Kalogirou’s post stated that her mother pleaded with Ateneo to reassign Baldwin to a team involving adults, away from minors and the university setting. She alleged that instead of addressing the concerns, Ateneo ignored these warnings and subjected her mother to significant hardship over several months.
Efi, through her Auckland-based lawyer Tudor Clee, explained that she has been married to Baldwin since 2011 but left him in early 2020 due to safety concerns for herself and their children. Efi stressed that she repeatedly informed Ateneo that children were not safe around Baldwin and urged the institution to remove him from the campus. She also claimed that the university responded by attempting to intimidate and silence her, though she did not specify who led this campaign.
Efi expressed disappointment regarding Baldwin’s message to the families of two players, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who tragically drowned during a team-building event. As of this report, neither Ateneo de Manila University nor Tab Baldwin has issued an official response.
This case highlights serious concerns related to the safety and welfare of minors involved in university sports programs and the institutional response to reported risks.
